There’s growing confusion in the marketplace between natural kratom leaf and synthetic or concentrated 7‑hydroxymitragynine (7‑OH) products. While some 7‑OH items are marketed as “natural kratom,” they are not the same — and they present significant risks.
Natural kratom comes from the Mitragyna speciosa tree, whose crushed or powdered leaves contain only trace, naturally occurring levels of 7‑OH. These levels are part of the plant’s natural balance and have been safely used for centuries.
By contrast, “enhanced” or “spiked” kratom extracts can contain up to 500 % more 7‑OH than would ever be found naturally. That’s a major difference — especially since 7‑OH is roughly 13 times more potent than morphine. These concentrated products may look like natural leaf powder but are chemically altered and far more powerful.
